Monthly Archives: March 2011

Little Boys and Periods.

Nope, not these periods. . . . . . . . . . . . . . The 28 day kind. Yes, I’m going there. In the blog-o-sphere. Yes, I’m embarrassed as hell about this, but ya know – who really reads these anyway? HA!

But since I have both monthly periods AND a 2 year old I have some stuff to say on the subject. And I wont’ remember these things forever so, well, I’m recording it for posterity.  Brace yourselves. (Or, maybe that’s just me bracing myself for when someone I know reads this LOL!) But it’s TOO FREAKING FUNNY not to write out… so here goes.

A little background: I am a single mom. I have a 2 year old son. We spend a lot of time together, lol. We are not prudes, and we live as if there is nothing about the human body to be ashamed about – I still shower with him sometimes, in the essence of saving time…. I’ve practiced elimination communication with him, so he’s been runnin around at home nakie for like 2 years now, and still does sometimes. And I don’t care! I love the overall attitude of it and find it very freeing – I hope he’ll grow up the same way. God made us this way and it’s all good. Whatever, right?

Yep, this little cutie is the instigator here! LOL

That being said… sometimes I wish not to share my human body with him, like, when I’m showering and he starts inspecting my ‘cheechees’, wants to blow raspberries on my butt, or, Heaven Forbid, when I want to go the bathroom. By myself. I rarely get to go pee all by myself. Maybe some mommies do, maybe it works for them, but even if I shut the door, he comes in. ALWAYS. So he’s seen it all. In fact, though he’s usually just in-and-out the whole time, sometimes he’ll actually bring a book or some toys and have a sit down on his little step stool to keep me company. I’m like, “Hi. Can I go pee please? Alone? Maybe?” Nah. He disagrees with my need to have private time, in the bathroom or otherwise! Ok, well, that’s just life. BUT. since he’s ever-present in all of my moments of glory… he’s pretty much seen it all. And asked about it, and tried to help… (Nice when your 2 year old grabs a cloth – more on that another time – and says “Let’s wipe you, Mommy!” Um, yeah I can take care of that thanks.) So he’s experienced even the monthly stuff, even at the tender (Wait, did I say tender? Make that precocious!) age of 2.

So here comes the period part of the story. He’s always so fascinated by me going to the bathroom.. (you do realize that two year olds wave byebye to their poop as they flush it? The other day he even said “See ya later!” to it! And, if I’m not fast enough, he’ll do similar things when I am going.)

He’s taken one of my cloth ‘panty liners’ (yeah yeah I’ll explain the ‘cloth’ in another post) from the clean diaper laundry, stuck it between his legs and started walking around the house holding it between his legs and I said “Yep, that’s where it goes!” Sometimes, when I’m not fast enough with the child-proofed cabinet, he’ll even snatch tampons from under the bathroom sink and turn them into toys. One day he unwrapped a new one before I could stop him, pulled the cotton bit out of the plastic applicator and ran around the house one day swinging it by its string, shouting “I have a yo-yo, I have a yo-yo!”.  Another time he ditched the cotton and walked around (for quite some time actually) wearing the two halves of the applicators on each pointer finger. I can’t even remember now what he thought the point of that was but he thought it quite entertaining. Amazing. Other times, he’ll just ask me “Blue (reg) or green (super)?” And then hand me one. Nice.

However, on Monday of this week, he topped the cake. I had just come home from work and had to pee so bad I thought I was going to explode. I said my hello and then told him we could play after mommy went pee! I hustled in to the toilet, and was peeing when he (*shocker*) followed me in and stands there whining about wanting to play… I said “I HAVE TO PEE! After I’m done we can play!” He started crying even worse, and started yanking on the bathroom cabinet… stopping every second or so and staring into it through the crack the lil latch allows.. then yanking some more. I told him to stop, that he knows he can’t get into the cabinet and that “My God, please just give me one minute to finish going pee and we can play!”

Crying, he throws his head back and wails “You have to floss!” I was at a loss (we do floss our teeth together but we don’t keep it under the sink, it’s on the counter) and just kind of brushed right over it, told him I was almost done and he throws that adorable little head back yet again and wails “NO, YOU HAVE TO FLOSS YOUR PEEPEE!”

It took me about a split second to ‘get’ his drift..and then…

I. Thought. I. Would. DIE. LAUGHING.

Huh. Have you ever wondered what kids think of some of the things we grown ups do? Well. Now I know one of those things. So. Any other mommies out there ever flossed your peepee????

ROFLMFAO! I have been randomly bursting into a giggle ALL FREAKIN WEEK as this little angel, bell-like voice wails “Floss your peepee!” through my memory. And now, so will you.

:)

St. Patrick loves Chocolate Lovely Loves

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Happy Anniversary shout out to MVM and OP for an astounding 34 years of marriage today! Congrats guys :) Keep pluggin away! :)

Today I worked really hard actually had a lot of fun making the Beebits a green lunch to take to school! It was a “Bit o Green” Day today, where all the kidlets were bringing their own green foods/snacks.

In his lil 'Laptop Lunchbox' (thanks Meema!)

So today, for lunch, the Beebits had green marinated tofu, halved green grapes, half a green spinach muffin (which I also sent enough of to share with everyone!), green squash, green (sort of) rice and sweet green soymilk! Did you know it’s very hard to get brown rice to become green? Hmmpf. He seemed to like his lunch :)

OH and this was me havin ‘green spirit’, in my ‘Irish Girls Have More Fun” shirt (yep I have some Irish blood!), but after I took the picture, I realized a couple things. 1. Since I was using a mirror… the words were backward HAHahaha! Oops. :) and 2. My mirror needs cleaned. *blushing* Hehe.

Hmm...

A friend of mine gave me an idea. (Thanks Mr. Todd!)

Thaaaaaat's better. (Though now the rest of me is backward!)

**giggle**

**************************************************************************

I loooooove chocolate chip cookies. If there were a thing I have to avoid because I’ll eat them all in one sitting, these may be it. (Well, and french fries. omigosh.) I loooooove baking ccc’s, both tried n true lovely love batches… OR trying new recipes for ccc’s! Sometimes I find a new lovely recipe on a blog or cooking site.. and sometimes I just make one up!

Tonight I tried some variances in a recipe I’ve used before, changed up a few things, and It. Is. Good. I am going to share with you. :)

You know you want to lick your screen... it's ok. Go on... no one will EVER know... ;)

(Healthy) Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Lovely Loves

(for a ‘personal’ sized batch)

  • 1/4 c. whole wheat pastry flour
  • 1/4 c. quick cooking rolled oats
  • 1/8 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/8 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/8 tsp. cinnamon
  • pinch salt (1/16th tsp maybe)
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. light agave nectar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 tsp. water
  • 1 Tbsp. unsweetened applesauce
  • 20-30 g. vegan dark chocolate chips (depends on how chocolate-y you like them to be! I used 25 g.)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper (the only way to bake, if you ask me!) Mix all dry ingredients well in a small bowl. Add wet ingredients right into the dry in the same bowl and mix very well. (If you find your cookie dough is too dry at all, add like 1 tsp. more applesauce.) Form into balls on the parchment paper, and lightly pat down the tops to help them flatten. Bake about 10-12 min. Keep an eye on them, they won’t brown like you may be used too, and you don’t want them overdone! (They’ll be drier that way.) My batch made 9 cookies, if you make kind of ‘mini’ cookies, it will easily make a dozen. (If you are planning on eating the whole batch, mini cookies would be fun!)

No, I did not eat the whole batch… there are 2 left for tomorrow…. ;)

**************************************************************************

Now, I have to show off this pic, cause, when the Beebits and I went out to the store first freaking thing this morning, it was still early, cold and foggy out. He insisted that he wanted to go out in his jammies. That’s fine. BUT he only has one pair of shoes that fit over those feetie jammies. And since it was cold, I insisted on a beanie. He was a riot.

We love galoshes...

And yep that’s a Sbux in his hand! He got a ‘special milk’, which is like, 1/3 c. or soof vanilla soymilk, 1/3 cc water and some ice! He thinks it’s the best thing since sliced bread. Seriously. There’s somethin different about it than what we drink at home. Right? Somehow? ;) lol.

**************************************************************************

Well, now. On a serious note. After a pretty fun morning, and a little nap, the wee man apparently had a very rough day at school and by the time I picked him up was even worse. I’m talkin insane. I called my parents while still on the road and asked them to stop what they were doing and do some prayin for their grandson. I swear he was under attack today! I was boggled by his behavior and attitude. Crazy. So after a quick trip to the store, which was very tiring, when we got home and he became … manic. At the advice of a very wise MVM/Meema, He went to NIGHT NIGHT. ASAP. Asleep at 5:30. Wow. Was someone tired perhaps?! Pray for us and him especially oh you my praying friends, that this doesn’t happen again anytime soon! Ack! We prayed for calm and peace in his litle mind and body. Hopefully tomorrow is a brighter day.

**************************************************************************

Ok, now for a simple math problem: The Beebits going to bed at 5:30pm = him waking up > or = to the butt crack of dawn. Which means momma’s bedtime is NOW. I’m tired too. ;)

Where’s my allowance?

This weekend was chores chores chores…. Well, with some leisure thrown in for sure, but still.  When I was a kid, I don’t remember anyone telling me that you still have to do chores (in fact, more of them!) as a grown up but that you don’t get any allowance for it either! Hmpf. I’d like to file a complaint…………

I find, today, that I have kind of a lot to say. So, today’s about chronicling some of my recent ‘moments’…

*********************************************************************

I only found out today and am quite bummed actually, that it seems there was a “Natural Products Expo West” this weekend and in Anaheim – only like 1 1/2 hrs drive! and I missed it completely.  Now, I’m not just about “natural”, but from what I’ve read there was an enormous showing of vegan foods, both little and well-known, and with tried and true AND new foods coming out. ACK! I’d have loved to be there! I was able to live vicariously through another blogger, quarrygirl (found a link from Chicago Soy DairyDandies anyone?) for her site and sat drooling over her latest post. Omg. You have got.to.check.this.out.

OHPLEASEOHPLEASEOHPLEASE let some of these wonderful goodies be making their way to San Diego soooooooon!

  • Vegan marshmallow Tweets (think Easter, think Peeps but not made of disgusting gelatin and hfcs like the “real” ones)
  • Gardein burgers!? Gardein is freaking AWESOME. Burgers!?
  • Fried Mozza Tease-sticks??
  • Daiya Pepperjack?!

So much more I can’t even list there’s too many, go read the post, OMG! There is so much upcoming for the world of “mainstreaming veganism”. (Note: This is not to say that I will switch to a processed food diet from the homemade things I do now.. but there are some FUN tasty things available and more coming that are both a treat for us AND a way for more and more people to transition to veganism. And cruelty free is the WAY TO GO, even if it’s a bit processed. I think. But hey that’s just my opinion ;)

*********************************************************************

Friday morning, when the Beebits got up from sleep, he says to me “Look happened!”, holding out his favorite stuffed toy, his precious Piggyboo… “He got a rip mommy.” And sure enough, Piggyboo had an inch long tear right down his chin! Oh no! I asked him how that happened and he didn’t know… lol. He asked if I could fix it, and I said I would try! I asked him if he’d like me to add a little more stuffing to Piggyboo while I was fixing, because lil Piggyboo was lookin a little flat lately! He’s very loved. (Piggyboo sleeps with the Beebits, goes to school with him, plays with him…) He said “Okay mommy.” So Friday night was surgery! And I couldn’t even believe it, after I’d stuffed some new fluff into Piggy’s belly to fatten him back up, and was sewing the chin tear, another rip opened up by his nose as I was working! Un-freaking-believeable! So I sewed that one back up too and went to looking for other weak spots. Poor lil Piggyboo seems to be ok now, but I started thinking about when/if he does rip again? We got he lil guy used as it was, and now he’s so loved… I’m afraid he won’t last… so I promptly went online looking for a Piggyboo backup. Gotta have a spare! He’s hard to find, lemme tell ya. Got lucky on barnes & Noble and ordered the set (apparently that’s how it comes) which is 3 books and the plush guy.  *Whew*!! Gotta have a backup plan mommies. Fo sho.

All plumped up, washed and sewn! Good as new :)

*********************************************************************

I was supposed to be working yesterday, doing a special project at work, but some product we were waiting for was delayed and so there was no need for me to go in. So I was like, “Huh. What am I going to do with out work all weekend?” Not like I didn’t have stuff to do… it just kinda threw of my ‘plan’ for my weekend. I had, seriously, like 5 loads of laundry to do, which isn’t a problem in itself, but when you’re in an apartment and have to coin laundry it, having a pile up kinda pins you to the house. But I wanted to go somewhere with a Saturday of? (I’ve been working a lot of Saturdays since about October).

So, like any good Momma, my momma suggests that Fri night (since I never go out on Fri nights) I start my laundry so Sat isn’t so tied down. She’s so smart! I did 2 loads Fri night- was doin’ laundry til like 10pm lol. Then I stayed up til 1:30 reading (The Vampire Diaries – yep, same as the show, which, incidentally, I think I like better than the books? Might be a first time…. the show is vastly different from the books.) and slept in Sat until 10 am. Niiiiiice. ;) Then, having decided to just bite the bullet and spend the money on a haircut, I went to a local ‘salon’ called The Electric Chair (very different, tattoo-parlor-ish kinda place, it was awesome) and got a trim cut like 5 inches taken off. And I LOVE it!

Before: Taken a few weeks ago..

After: Today, after I flat-ironed it, that way I'd normally do my hair...

From the back

Went from there to do a few errands, then came home, changed into a bathin suit – NO LIE – and went to the beach for an hour with some more Vampire Diaries. I have to admit, when we are able to move, I will miss the beach! It’s like a 5 min drive to this lil private beach on the harbor.. Omg. Beautiful day.

Once I got home from the beach, at like 4pm, I set in to do some more laundry, and clean my house a bit. Got lil man’s toys all picked up, vacuumed, and id 2 more loads of clothes. (One of which, I might add, was my cloth towels, and lil man’s cloth diapers – his ‘nighttime pants’ lol – and so takes two wash and two dry cycles, sou kinda counts as 2 loads in itself!). That left the kitchen and bathroom for Sunday chores. *sigh* It’s never done!

AND I have like 4 recipes waiting to test for Happy Herbivore‘s book, but have to make a grocery trip before I can even get started on them AND because of some paperwork error my foodstamps haven’t come in for March and I have no grocery money! SO the recipes have to wait til… tomorrow? Hopefully tomorrow. *more sighs* Lol! If it ain’t one thing it’s another.

*********************************************************************

Damn.

I missed my lil man this weekend. He was with his dad all weekend this weekend… he came home tonight at 6, but the ‘full weekends’ away are so hard for me.  I try to be positive about it and just work through, getting my chores and errands, etc. done.. just filling the time gap til he’s home to me again. I love my lil guy so much I just can’t even put it into words. I don’t think there are words.

First a sweet smile...

And then just plain SILLY! lol!

*********************************************************************

Of course we went to gymnastics class again Friday, and my lil guy had just as much fun as the previous week! In fact, he’s even learning how to to the ‘donkey kicks’ all by himself :) These kiddos have so much fun… runnin and playing, exploring the wonder of movement and music… What a wonder! They’re so much fun to watch! :)

Makin music with the sticks...

Hiding the sticks so Mr. Turtle can't eat them back up!

Still a fav... the swingin bar! Look at those muscles!

Drumming the mat durig the "Goodbye song"... Until next week!

*********************************************************************

Since I haven’t posted a food pic in awhile… AND I haven’t mentioned my love… here’s some yummiess to nomnomnom.

Lunch today, some lovely tofu shirataki noodles with nooch and soy curls!

OMG. I am still as obsessed with Soy Curls as the day I discovered them I was thinking today how perfect they’d be for fajitas.. or carnitas… or just warmed up and eaten right out of the pan. I mean, not like I’ve done that or anything… I’m just sayin. You could. *giggle*

The DAMN awesome quiche I made for my MOPs grup breakfast table a couple weeks ago (before cooking)

I make this quiche occasionally, mostly when I have people to impress cause it’s freaking amazing. And super versatile. This time I had the ingredients to make it to the letter, but you can sub veg ingredients for whateve you have on hand and that’s SO awesome. I have the desire to experiment with making a crustless version… Will let you know how that comes out. This exact one, though, I got from the Whole Foods customer submitted recipes, and is found here.

MMmmmmm.... don't you wanna KNOW? It's gooooooooooood too. I know I'm sucha tease! ;)

One of the recipes I’ve tested for HH‘s new book coming out. Nope, not tellin ya what it is, but it’s so good! *snicker*

*********************************************************************

OH! Ok so here’s another cutie thing my lil guy said today… Ok, so he loves to comb my hair. He’ll get ‘his comb’ and climb behind me and comb my hair. If it’s in a ponytail he’ll ask me to take it down. Cute. So today after his dad dropped him back off, he’d climbed up, comb in one hand, cup of juice/water in the other, set down the cup and was combing. Then he says “Just a little water…” and take up his cuup to behind my head and I said, “Um, no, no water.” and he goes “Just a little water” and I said, “Hney that’s not water, that’s your splash.” And (lol) he leans around to look at me in the face, shows me his cup and says “This a little water.” So I’m like, “Okay…” He takes the cup, kinda shakes it at the back of my head and says, “Okay, now comb” and he combs a little more.. then he pauses and says, (wait for it….) “Just a little smooch.” And plants a big ol kiss on the back of my head. **AWWWW!** All done. MAN did I look pretty. ;) I love it!

OH okay, okay, one more. So, normally, when I’m going to the bathroom, I don’t turn on the lights. Not even at night, most of the time, cause I leave the door open and there’s light from the kitchen or whatever… but since normally I also don’t get to go by myself, lil man’ll come in and turn on the light. I always tell him, especially when it’s daytime, “We don’t need the light honey, there’s plenty of light in here.” It’s a waste of electricity anyway, but his grasp of that concept is still tenuous, so I don’t go much into it. But anyway, once it’s dusk, or so, when he’s going, he always turns on the lights, and that’s fine. So today, when he had just gotten home, he’s run into the bathroom “I gotta go pee Mommy”, and it was kinda dusky out… and I said “Okay” and followed him in there, and as he’s standing on the stool, pushing his pants down, I flipped on the light. Habit, for him, ya know? So he stops working his pants and looks at me and says “Dont’ turn a light Mommy.” I said, “Oh, okay…” as I’m flipping it back off he looks at me all seriously and says “There’s plenty light in here.” LMAO! It’s all I can do sometimes not to just crack up hysterically at him. He uses my words back at me and it’s SO freaking adorable. Hahahah! I love it!

*sigh*  :)

*********************************************************************

Ok, well, speaking of the bathroom… I seriously have to pee AND I really have o get to sleep. Big day tomorrow. (Or Both of us are spending the night at my parnets house tomorrow, I’ll let ya know why after. :)

Goodnight! :)

Going to Dancing Class!

Yay! I’ve found a toddler gymnastics class for my wee lil man, on Friday mornings for the next six weeks! He’s so funny, I told him it was gymnastics, and he repeated me… then promptly started calling it “dancing class”! I’ve no idea why. :) Cute though, huh? Too funny, also, when he apparently told his dad that he had dancing class also, and hs dad’s like, “Um.” (to me of course…) Hehehehe. I swear he didn’t get that from me – I said gymnastics! It’s through a city rec center, so is pretty affordable, and THANK THE LORD we got a low income fee waiver, so I can even enroll him! It’s so cute! It’s put on by Superstar Gymnastics, here in San Diego – and I have to say that the teachers are terrific! They are SO good with the little kidlets, seriously. They have parachute games, and get to play/learn on the balance beam, swinging bar, spring board… all kinds of fun things. And it’s all done to music… I loooove this class! Yay Beebits!

Sitting at the parachute, waiting for the next game...

Learning how to do 'donkey kicks'!

Help from Miss KatieP on the balance beam - airplane arms out!

Now going alone!

Swing up and touch your toes to the bar! He did this without help even! So strong :)

Koala crawl....

Peek-A-Boo mommy!

I will update as the class goes on if I get anymore adorable lil pics. He had SO MUCH FUN, he didn’t want to leave. :)

***************************************************

In other cutie patootie news, my lil man ‘helped’ me wash our filthy car over the weekend… we drove to Meema and Beepa’s house Sunday morning to surprise them – he hadn’t got to see Meema in a couple weeks… It was such a beautiful day!

Helping mommy wash our nasty dirty car...

Such a good helper!

***************************************************

Ok, so, also, I’m currently helping test for a new vegan cookbook coming out by Happy Herbivore – and it has been SO MUCH FUN! I’ve never tested before, lemme say that it’s a great way to try new things – I’ve made some stuff that not only wouldn’t have occurred to me to make, but also some things that I maybe never would have even tried. So, 1. Congrats to HH on the new book AND 2. thank you so much for allowing me (and the Beebits!) to be a part! I may post some (vague) pics of things we make, or talk about yummies – though – for obvious reasons – I can’t be specific or actually post recipes… If you see something you like, you’ll have to wait for the book ;)

Lil man, supervising the new recipe I was testing out :) He's good at supervising, lol!

***************************************************

When I came home from work last Wednesday, and my OP was there with lil man… he says “He wants pizza for dinner.” Hm. We had no pizza?! So I pop into the kitchen to see what I can manage… Bread? Check. Tomato sauce? Check. Daiya mozza-style? Check. Awesome. I put some tomato sauce on two slices of wheat bread, sprinkled them with some garlic and herbs, topped with some Daiya and popped them into the broiler. VOILA! Lil ‘pizzas’. He was so excited!! *whew*! Thank the LORD for handing out innovation to us mommies when we need it!

Very happy with his pizza sandwiches!

***************************************************

I also have to write these down before I forget – some heart-meltingly cute things that he’s said to me recently. You know, I’ve read all the “Things Kids Say” emails… and heard stories of the darndest stuff that they come up with… and even heard my lil man say some pretty cute stuff. But I’m still constantly amazed by things he says that he thinks up all on his own. How he manages to get the context right, if not always the words… and how sensitive and sweet he can be! I love my little baby bear SO FREAKING MUCH!

** At naptime a few days ago… I laid him in his bed, and we prayed and I sang him a song… and he grabbed my hand and was just lying there holding my hand clutched to his chest for a minute (I had to leave for work), and he says, quietly, “Mommy, Can I keep you?” OMG, I almost cried!

** Yesterday I gave him some black salt marinated tofu, for a snack, and he ate it all.. and asked for more tofu. So I cut him a chunk of plain – since all the marinated was gone. And he comes back to me a few minutes later, hold his tofu piece out to me and says, “Can you marry it please?” LOL! Took me a minute to figure it out, but he wanted more marinade hahahaha! I always tell him when we have ‘marinated tofu’, so he’s obviously picked that up. So funny!

***************************************************

Coming soon – A post on something VERY IMPORTANT to me! I just got my wee lil man a new carseat, even though it’s expensive, because his safety is more important to me than almost anything else. And I want to talk about it. I have to spread the word – it needs to be important to everyone!!!! Stay tuned….. ;)

Our awesome new 'big boy' seat. :)

Now I know my ABC’s……

I’ve been a bit M.I.A. for awhile, haven’t I? For shame… I have been in a rough patch here at home… including over THREE WEEKS of sickies for myself AND my lil man. It’s been ridiculous. We’re both on antibiotics right now, which makes me very sad, but sometimes it’s necessary. BUMP UP the probiotics! I’ve been doubling lil man’s daily yum-yum-dophilus lately… just to be on the safe side. *sigh*

Anywho – I saw this on VeganSunshine’s blog, and I thought it’d be a fun relatively painless way to get back into the swing of things. Not that I don’t have a LOT to say, cause it’s been a long freakin’ while… but this is an … shall we say.. effortless post, that I can use to just get something published and feel like I’m BACK! And I’m interspersing some recent pics, just in case you’ve forgotten us, since it’s been so long, here’s some reminders ;)

So, without further ado (thanks Whitney!), here are my current ABC’s. :)

Well, I’ll be posting again regularly here so because I have some cutie patootie pictures to put up, since lil man started a wee gymnastics class! AND I’m doing some recipe testing for Happy Herbivore, so I’ll hopefully be able to post at least a pic or two for some food porn viewing pleasure also. :)

Oh it’s good to be back!
